Who are we?

The Museum Professionals Association was founded in 1995 with the aim of strengthening unity and solidarity within the museum community and preventing professional divisions. Since then, our association has been working to protect cultural and natural heritage, acquire cultural assets for museums, and improve the personal rights of museum professionals.

The main objective of our association is to improve museum activities and to compile and create resources that can be used by museum professionals and those interested in museology in Türkiye. In this regard, we collaborate with individuals, institutions, and organizations to continue our work in areas such as the exhibition of cultural assets, strengthening awareness in society about the protection of tangible and intangible heritage, preventing illegal trade in cultural assets, improving the personal rights of employees, and promoting professional specialization.

In line with evolving information and communication technologies, establishing standards and developing ethical guidelines for museums in Turkey are among our primary goals. Furthermore, we are resolutely committed to strengthening cooperation between the public and civil society to modernize museums and improve their economic and social opportunities.

How do we work??

The Museum Professionals Association is an Ankara-based organization with activities throughout Turkey. It carries out its operations through the work of its Board of Directors, Inspection Board, and volunteers. With our regional offices, connections with universities, and members from various cities, our association connects with those interested in museums across the country.

In Turkey, ICOM develops projects aimed at improving museums and museology activities, preserving cultural heritage, and bringing it together with the public more effectively. It also organizes and implements events for the May 18th ICOM International Museum Day celebrations. Each year, it monitors the professional problems of museology professionals, develops solutions, and carries out activities to strengthen professional solidarity.

Our association aims to increase knowledge sharing in the field of museology through national and international collaborations, support innovative practices, and make the role of museums in social life more visible.

Regional Representatives

The Museum Professionals Association’s regional representatives are structured to expand the association’s activities throughout Türkiye and ensure effective communication with members. The association has designated offices in eight regions, with Istanbul as a separate office; the other regions are Marmara (excluding Istanbul), Aegean, Mediterranean, Central Anatolia, Black Sea, Eastern Anatolia, and Southeastern Anatolia. Representatives appointed in each region are responsible for maintaining communication with members and individuals working or volunteering in the museum field, organizing training and events, supporting student membership recruitment, and increasing visibility through social media posts. Working in constant coordination with the central administration, representatives plan regional activities, prepare reports, and communicate with relevant authorities when approval is required from the center. Thus, the regional offices function as a critical structure ensuring the association’s active and organized presence throughout Türkiye.
